Lot 228: A Pair of Mid-20th Century Woven Fibre Tub Armchairs
A pair of woven fibre tub armchairs, each featuring a rounded backrest that transitions into integrated armrests. The chairs are constructed from woven twisted-paper fibre over a wire and bentwood frame, supported by four tapered legs terminating in metal ferrules. The first chair is finished in white paint and is fitted with a black textured square cushion. The second chair is finished in cream paint and features a rectangular box-seat cushion upholstered in a reddish-pink fabric with a repeating floral damask pattern. The woven skirts on both chairs extend downwards, partially concealing the upper portion of the legs. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The chairs show signs of heavy use and environmental exposure. There is significant paint loss and chipping across the frames, most notably on the legs and the lower edges of the woven skirts (photo 1). The woven fibre appears largely intact in the primary seating areas, although minor fraying and breaks in the weave are visible at the edges of the armrests and seat bases. The cushions are non-original additions and show visible signs of wear and surface soiling.
