Lot 12: A Pair of Enamel Shield Cufflinks with Maltese Cross Detail
A pair of cufflinks, each featuring a shield-shaped terminal with a bipartite design. The terminals are decorated with red and white guilloché enamel and overlaid with a cross with flared arms, surmounted by a crown. A blue enamel scroll at the base of each shield bears the gold-tone legend MALTA. The cufflinks are of metal construction with a gold-tone finish and feature fixed link bars with folding torpedo-style toggles. The reverse of the terminals and the link bars show a tarnished finish with a visible patina. No maker’s marks, hallmarks, or purity stamps are visible on the items.
Condition report:
The cufflinks show signs of surface wear and environmental exposure. The enamel on both pieces displays fine surface scratches and minor pitting. A visible chip is present in the white enamel at the upper left corner of one shield (photo 1). The metal components show significant tarnish and areas of verdigris, particularly on the link bars and reverse surfaces. The folding toggle mechanisms appear intact. No original packaging is present.
