Lot 1: A Japanese Lidded Porcelain Jar, Imari Style Floral Decoration
A Japanese porcelain lidded jar of baluster form, featuring a multi-paneled decorative scheme in the Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red, and gilded highlights. The body is divided into vertical panels; one panel depicts thistles and foliage, another contains a large stylised peony and chrysanthemum motif against an iron-red ground, and a third displays a basket of flowers. The neck and foot are decorated with a repeating gilded karakusa scroll pattern over a dark blue ground. The domed lid, which matches the jar’s floral and foliate motifs, is topped with a pointed, gilded finial. The underside of the jar is not shown. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The jar shows signs of age and wear. Significant rubbing and loss to the gilding is visible on the finial and the rim of the lid, where the underlying white porcelain is exposed. The enamel colours remain bright and intact. No cracks, chips, or repairs are visible from the exterior. The jar is supplied with its original matching lid.
