Lot 46: A Glazed Ceramic Hot Water Bottle with a Knurled Screw Stopper
A glazed ceramic hot water bottle, of flattened ovoid form with a flat base, designed for use as a bed or foot warmer. The vessel features a top-mounted filling neck set slightly off-centre and a bulbous, rounded grip handle integrally formed at one end. It is fitted with a dark-coloured screw-in stopper featuring a knurled edge and a concentric circular pattern to the top surface. The exterior is finished in a uniform cream-coloured slip glaze with a glossy finish. The flat base allows the bottle to rest securely on a horizontal surface. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The hot water bottle shows signs of domestic use and age. There is minor surface pitting to the glaze across the body (photo 1) and scattered areas of brownish staining or foxing (photos 1 and 2). The screw-in stopper is present and appears intact. The glaze remains largely bright.
