Lot 37: A Hose St. Pottery Two-Handled Pedestal Cup, with pastoral scene
A two-handled loving cup, of cylindrical form with a flared rim and two ornate, scrolled handles, supported on a raised, flared pedestal base. The ceramic body is finished with a graduated yellow and orange ground, featuring a central transfer-printed pastoral scene depicting a seated couple in a meadow surrounded by lambs and flowering trees. The interior is white glazed. The rim, handles, and pedestal base are finished with a bright gilding. A red printed circular mark on the base features a central coiled hose motif, encircled by the text ‘HOSE ST. POTTERY’ in the top arc and ‘TUNSTALL STOKE ON TRENT’ in the bottom arc, transcribed in capitals exactly as printed. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of minor wear and handling. There is rubbing to the gilded finish on the upper scrolls of both handles and along the bottom edge of the pedestal base (photo 1). The transfer-printed scene and the white glazed interior (photo 2) appear well-preserved, and no chips, cracks, or repairs are visible to the ceramic body.
