Lot 118: A Daphne Pain English Glass Paperweight, Commemorating The 1194 Doncaster Royal Charter
A circular glass paperweight featuring a cobalt blue internal ground and an etched surface design. The central motif depicts a figure in medieval costume battling a lion, with internal white and blue swirled trailing decoration visible around the outer rim. The top surface is etched with the inscriptions RICHARD I and GRANTED DONCASTER THE 1ST ROYAL CHARTER 1194. The item is accompanied by a red textured presentation box and a printed white card label. The label features a circular red monogram logo and is printed with the text DAPHNE PAIN PAPERWEIGHTS, 40 STOCKTON, WARMINSTER, WILTSHIRE, ENGLAND. BA12 0SQ. TEL/FAX: 01985 – 850408. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the glass itself.
Condition report:
The glass paperweight is in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or deep scratches to the surface (photo 1). The etched design remains crisp and clear. The accompanying red presentation box shows minor signs of shelf wear to the exterior but remains structurally sound (photo 2). A printed maker\'s label is included.
