Buyer's Premium:

A collection of UK heptagonal 50 pence coins, all of the large pre-1997 specification. The group includes three commemorative examples struck for the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings and one standard circulation type. The 1994 coins feature the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, inscribed ELIZABETH II D·G·REG·F·D·1994, with the artist’s initials RDM visible on the neck truncation. The reverse of these coins depicts a design of Allied invasion aircraft and ships by John Mills, inscribed 50 PENCE. The 1981 coin features the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, inscribed D·G·REG·F·D·1981 ELIZABETH·II. The reverse shows the seated figure of Britannia with a lion and the legend NEW PENCE 50. All coins have plain edges. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.

Condition report:

The coins show varied signs of handling and environmental exposure. The 1994 commemorative examples exhibit fine surface scratches, contact marks, and light oxidation spots on both the obverse and reverse surfaces (photo 2). The 1981 coin features a proof-like finish with mirror fields and frosted relief; the obverse shows noticeable peripheral toning and haze (photo 1), while the reverse exhibits dark toning around the legends (photo 2). No protective cases or original packaging are supplied.
