A multi-volume collection of miniature books containing the plays and poetical works of William Shakespeare, presented within a dark-stained wooden two-tier display shelf. Each volume is bound in a red textured material with gilt-stamped lettering and decorative scrolls to the spines. The front covers feature a gilt-stamped heraldic device consisting of a falcon crest to the left and a shield with a diagonal bend to the right. Internal pages include red running titles for acts and scenes, such as ACT III. SC. II. KING RICHARD II. and ACT IV. SC. VI. CORIOLANUS. The display shelf features shaped side panels and a central vertical partition. No maker’s marks, publisher’s information, or dates of publication are visible on the items.
Condition report:
The set shows heavy wear consistent with age and handling. The spines demonstrate significant rubbing with extensive loss to the red surface material and gilt titles (photo 4 and photo 5). The covers show surface scuffing and bumping to the corners (photo 7 and photo 8). The text blocks are intact but exhibit age-related toning to the paper edges (photo 6). The wooden shelf has minor surface marks and dust (photo 1).
