A late Victorian 925 silver card case and wallet combination, featuring a rectangular form decorated with engine-turned patterns and hand-engraved foliate scrolls to both exterior faces. The front cover includes a central vacant circular cartouche. The hinged case opens to reveal a tan leather interior with multiple pockets and a central loop holding a small 925 silver propelling pencil. The pencil is designed with a cylindrical body, a fluted grip, and a knurled terminal. Struck hallmark punches on the interior silver rim include a walking lion passant, an anchor symbol, a lowercase letter V in a pointed shield, and the initials W.V&S within a rectangular shield. The set is presented in its original leather-bound case, which features a pink silk lining to the lid and a deep red velvet base. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The 925 silver exterior exhibits light surface scratches and areas of natural tarnish (photo 2). The leather interior is intact and supple, showing minor age-related discolouration (photo 1). The presentation box shows scuffing and wear to the leather at the corners and edges (photo 4), though the interior silk and velvet remain vibrant (photo 5). The pencil mechanism appears physically intact but has not been tested for functionality (photo 1).
