The collection features printed advertising for a wide variety of British beverage brands, including GUINNESS, GOLD LABEL, CARLSBERG, HEINEKEN, MACKESON, WATNEYS, STONES, BULMER’S, TUBORG, TETLEY’S, YOUNGERS, BARNSLEY BITTER, and FLOWERS. Legible printed inscriptions and slogans include after work GUINNESS, See what Big Chief Toucan do — HIM STRONG, GOLD LABEL BOTTLE LAGER BOTTLED BY SAMUEL SMITH, NEW THE NAME FOR BOTTLED BEER TREBLE ‘B’ IT’S SUPREME STONES, Try it and taste the difference MACKESON STOUT, WATNEYS Brown Ale, Ready when you are, Bob., ASK FOR Carlsberg LAGER, LAGER BEER Heineken, *Put BULMER’S CIDER inside your, and BARNSLEY BITTER. The mats are decorated with various mid-century graphic styles, including the iconic Guinness Toucan, illustrated portraits for Bulmer’s Cider, and a pin-up graphic for Jean. Condition report:
The collection shows signs of use in a commercial environment consistent with age. Circular staining from beverage containers is visible on multiple examples, including the Guinness Toucan and AEG mats (photo 1). Edge wear, scuffing, and rounding of corners are present across the assortment (photo 2). General light surface soiling and age-related yellowing or foxing are present on the cardboard surfaces (photo 3). Minor creasing and ink fading are also visible on several examples (photo 3).
