A brooch designed in the form of a Venetian gondola, featuring a central cabin and a gondolier. The piece is constructed from 835 silver and is grain-set throughout with numerous rose-cut marcasites. The design includes a gondolier at the stern holding an oar, and a central cabin with open window apertures. The hull of the boat, the cabin roof, and the gondolier’s clothing are all decorated with faceted stones. The reverse of the brooch is fitted with a horizontal metal pin and a simple C-clasp. Stamped characters on the reverse read 835, followed by a single character that is not legible as a name or standard mark. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The brooch shows signs of natural ageing with a light patina and surface oxidation across the metalwork. The grain-set marcasites appear to be complete and intact (photo 1). The pin mechanism is straight and the clasp is functional (photo 3). No visible bends or losses to the cast metalwork are apparent.
