A Bank of England one pound banknote featuring a blue and pink obverse with a vignette of a seated Britannia within an ornate frame to the left and a large numeral 1 to the right. The printed legends include BANK OF ENGLAND, PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND THE SUM OF ONE POUND, and LONDON. The note bears the printed signature of the Chief Cashier K O PEPPIATT below the text FOR THE GOVR AND COMPY OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND. The serial number Y53D 745892 is printed in red at the upper right and lower left. The reverse is printed in brown and blue, displaying a central vignette of the Bank of England building at Threadneedle Street. This is framed by acanthus leaf scrolls and two circular medallions depicting St George and the dragon. A central circular watermark field is left clear of printing. No other maker’s marks or labels are visible.
Condition report:
The banknote shows signs of handling and circulation. A prominent vertical centre fold is visible across both the obverse and reverse (photo 1, 2). Light horizontal handling creases and soft, rounded corners are evident. Several small brown foxing spots and stains are present, most notably within the central circular watermark area on both sides (photo 1, 2). The note is supplied without a protective sleeve or case.
