This lot comprises two consecutive Bank of England ten shilling banknotes, Series C. The obverse of each note features a portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II positioned to the right and a seated figure of Britannia in a circular medallion at the left. The reverse displays a central vignette of a seated Britannia holding an olive branch and a shield. The notes are printed in reddish-brown ink on a cream paper substrate and include a vertical security thread. Legible obverse inscriptions include BANK OF ENGLAND, I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND THE SUM OF TEN SHILLINGS, LONDON FOR THE GOVR AND COMPY OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND, and the printed signature J.S. FFORDE followed by the title CHIEF CASHIER. The serial numbers are printed in black as B85N 527944 and B85N 527945. The reverse carries the inscriptions BANK OF ENGLAND and TEN SHILLINGS. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.
Condition report:
The banknotes show no signs of handling or circulation. Each note retains original paper crispness with sharp corners. There are no visible folds, pinholes, or stains on either the obverse or reverse. The lower note (serial number B85N 527944) exhibits a very slight horizontal ripple in the paper substrate (photo 1). Both notes are provided without protective housing.
