This lot comprises two Scottish paper one pound banknotes. The first note, issued by the North of Scotland Bank Limited, is dated 1ST JULY 1938 and bears the serial number A278618. The obverse features a central vignette of King’s College, Aberdeen, flanked by green and yellow geometric patterns. It carries the printed signature of HARVEY H. SMITH as GENERAL MANAGER. A printer’s mark at the bottom edge reads THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED, LONDON. The reverse displays a central armorial crest with two rampant animals and the motto FIDE ET INDUSTRIA, above the legend PURSUANT TO ACTS OF PARLIAMENT 16 & 17 VIC. CAP. 63 & 42 & 43 VIC. CAP. 76.
The second note, issued by the Bank of Scotland, is dated 8TH SEPTEMBER 1976 and bears the serial number C/56 0500477. The obverse features a portrait of Sir Walter Scott to the right and a central crest flanked by two female figures. It bears the printed signatures of M. HERRIES as GOVERNOR and A.M. RUSSELL as TREASURER & GENERAL MANAGER. The reverse depicts a sailing ship to the left and a medallion featuring a seated figure with the motto DITAT to the right. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item beyond the printed denominations and issuing authority details.
Condition report:
The banknotes show varying degrees of wear. The 1938 North of Scotland note exhibits significant signs of circulation including heavy foxing and brown spotting across both surfaces, a pronounced central vertical fold, multiple smaller creases, and frayed edges with rounded corners. The paper is soft and shows general age-related discoloration. The 1976 Bank of Scotland note appears to be in near-uncirculated condition, featuring extremely crisp paper, sharp corners, and no visible handling marks, folds, or staining. Neither note is supplied in a protective capsule or grading slab.
