Lot 276: A Pair of Framed Paintings by D R Clarke
This lot comprises a pair of original paintings on board, depicting urban transportation scenes in Sheffield. The first painting illustrates a green steam locomotive and tender bearing the inscription LNER crossing a stone viaduct. The scene below features vintage motor cars and two yellow double-decker trams at a pedestrian crossing. The second painting shows a yellow double-decker tram numbered 165 with a destination board reading MEADOWHEAD VIA CITY, positioned in a city street adjacent to the Sheffield Town Hall building. Both works are mounted behind glass in matching dark frames with a stepped profile. The signature D R CLARKE is painted in the lower right corner of each painting. No other maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.

Condition report:
The paintings show no visible signs of foxing, fading, or moisture damage. The frames exhibit age-related wear including minor surface scuffs and small chips to the finish, particularly at the corners (photo 1). Light dust accumulation is present behind the glass.
