This lot comprises a pair of china lidded jars of baluster form, featuring a textured ground in ochre and brown tones. Each jar is hand-painted with a still life fruit composition including apples, grapes, and blackberries, with additional acorn motifs to the shoulders and lids. The domed lids are surmounted by gilded orb finials and finished with gilded rims. Both jars are signed to the lower body R. MELLOR. The base of each jar bears two green printed marks. The first reads HAND PAINTED CHINA. BY STAFFORDSHIRE CRAFTSMEN COLLECTORS PIECE arranged around a central crown. The second mark features a crown above a stylised M and the text BAREUTHER WALDSASSEN BAVARIA-GERMANY 112. An impressed number 6809 is visible on the base of one jar.
Height: 47.5 cm.
Condition report:
The jars show minimal signs of handling and display. The hand-painted decoration remains vibrant, and the gilded finials and rims appear in good order with no significant wear or losses. No chips, cracks, or restorations are visible to the bodies or lids (Photos 1, 2, and 4). The bases show light shelf wear consistent with age.
