This lot comprises three miniature glazed character jugs, each modelled in the form of a seated gentleman in 18th-century costume. The figures are depicted wearing tricorn hats and frock coats over knee breeches, holding a mug in one hand. Two figures are finished in red coats with green breeches, while the third is finished in a blue coat with yellow breeches. Each piece features a hand-painted black script inscription to the base identifying a location in the English Lake District. These inscriptions read WALNEY ISLAND, CONISTON, and WINDERMERE. The interiors are finished in a pale cream glaze. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the items.
Condition report:
The figurines show signs of handling and localized surface damage. The figurine inscribed CONISTON has a significant loss of glaze and paint to the centre-front brim of the tricorn hat (photo 1). The figurine inscribed WALNEY ISLAND shows extensive flaking and loss to the green paint on the breeches and left leg, alongside small chips to the base rim (photo 1). The figurine inscribed WINDERMERE exhibits minor nicks to the base rim (photo 1). All three pieces display general surface wear and wear to the painted inscriptions. No original packaging is supplied.
