A decorative chess set, featuring thirty-two cast metal pieces and a board. The set is housed in a storage box with a red-moulded interior tray. The pieces follow a modified Staunton design, with the kings featuring a cross finial and the queens topped with a crenulated coronet. The knights are detailed with depicted bridles and harnesses, and the rooks are formed as castellated turrets. The board is constructed with light and dark squares and a broad border. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the pieces, board, or storage box.
Condition report:
The board shows signs of moderate use, with surface scratches, scuffs, and minor indentations across the playing surface and border (photo 1). The metal pieces show minor wear to the base edges, and one knight displays a hairline fissure near the neck (photo 3). The storage box exhibits age-related discolouration and wear to the exterior, while the red-flocked interior tray shows compression marks from the pieces (photo 1).
