A mid-20th century armchair of high-back Windsor form. The chair features a hoop back containing seven turned spindles and a decoratively pierced central splat with a circular motif. Swept arms are supported by two tapered spindles on each side. The shaped seat is joined to a frame comprising four splayed and tapered legs, reinforced by an H-shaped stretcher. The wood is finished with a dark stain throughout. A removable seat cushion upholstered in a cream damask-patterned fabric is included. A circular blue ink stamp containing the numerals 80 is present on the underside of the seat. Two brass screws are fitted to the underside to secure the upholstery. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The chair shows signs of use consistent with age. Finish loss, scuffs, and surface scratches are visible on the armrests, the edges of the seat, and the lower sections of the legs and feet (photos 1, 2, 3, and 4). The seat shows a visible grain join and surface wear (photo 3). The underside shows scuffing and areas of adhesive residue (photo 5). The removable upholstered cushion appears clean with no visible defects. The original press-stud fasteners for the cushion are absent or replaced by screws.
