A ceramic ginger jar and matching domed cover, of baluster form with a wide shoulder tapering to a slightly flared foot. The exterior is decorated in a traditional Imari palette featuring underglaze blue, overglaze red enamels, and gilt highlights. The decoration is divided into alternating lobed panels; one set depicts a basket of flowers containing thistles and chrysanthemums, while the opposing panels show a large stylised floral blossom set against a dark blue ground. The neck and foot are finished with gilt scrolling patterns on a cobalt blue reserve. The lid matches the body decoration and is topped with a bud-shaped finial. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the item.

Condition report:
The jar shows signs of handling and wear to the surface finishes. There is significant rubbing and loss to the gilt finish on the finial (photo 1) and around the rim of the lid (photo 2). The red and blue enamels are well-preserved. No chips, cracks, or repairs are visible. The original matching cover is present.
