Lot 9: A Collection of UK Pre-Decimal and Early Decimal Coins in a Decorative Brass-Bound Wooden Box

Buyer's Premium:

A collection of UK pre-decimal and early decimal coins contained within a cylindrical wooden storage box. The box features a dark-stained finish and is decorated with applied brass straps featuring embossed geometric patterns. Several circular brass bosses with floral motifs are applied to the body and the domed lid, which is topped with a brass ring pull. The coin collection includes a 1972 cupro-nickel commemorative crown celebrating the Silver Wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip; the obverse is inscribed ELIZABETH AND PHILIP 1947-1972. Also present are multiple Elizabeth II pennies dated in the 1960s, George VI pennies and half-pennies inscribed GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX FIDEI DEF., and twelve-sided nickel-brass threepences, including an example dated 1942. The coins represent various base metal compositions including bronze, brass, and cupro-nickel. No maker’s marks or signatures are legible on the box.


Condition report:

The coins are in circulated condition, showing moderate to heavy wear to the relief. Dirt accumulation, surface oxidation, and significant verdigris and toning are visible on the copper and bronze denominations (photo 1). The box exhibits surface wear, scuffs, and abrasions to the dark finish (photo 2). There is visible lifting to the edges of some brass straps (photo 3). Tarnish and oxidation are present on all brass components (photo 4).
