A figurative sculpture depicting a reclining mare and foal. The two horses are posed together on an integral textured base representing grass or earth. The piece is cast from a composite material containing Welsh coal, resulting in a characteristic dense, matte black finish with a finely textured surface. An adhesive yellow label is present on the underside, printed with the vertical text MADE WITH COAL FROM WALES.
Condition report:
The sculpture is in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. There is a light accumulation of surface dust and fibres caught in the textured details, consistent with previous display.
