A set of portable brass laboratory or apothecary beam balance scales. The set comprises a central brass balance beam with a fulcrum and vertical pointer, two circular brass weighing pans suspended by fine-link chains, a circular brass base plate with three recessed holes, and a brass pillar component with a hooked end and a pointed tip featuring a green-wrapped section. The set includes a collection of ten circular brass weights of varying sizes housed in custom-cut circular recesses. Several weights are incised with their mass in grams, including readable markings for 100 GM, 50 GM, 20 GM, 10 GM, 5 GM, 2 GM, and 1 GM. The components are stored within a rectangular case made of light-toned wood, lined with deep purple velvet. The case features a metal front clasp and hinges. No maker’s name, trademark, or serial number is visible on the balance beam, weights, or the wooden case.
Condition report:
The brass components exhibit a consistent aged patina with surface tarnish and oxidation spots throughout, as seen in all photographs. The wooden case shows surface abrasions, minor scratches, and wear to the finish, most notably at the corners (photo 1). The purple velvet lining is worn and shows significant dust accumulation, fading, and indentations from the stored components (photos 1, 3). The metal hinges and front clasp show minor surface oxidation but remain functional (photo 1). No structural damage, bends, or breaks are visible to the chains or the balance beam pointer.
