A decorative cast brass set of balance scales featuring a scrolling foliate beam. The beam is supported by a centrally positioned segmented column mounted onto a tiered octagonal base. The upper portion of the column includes a shaped handle and a small graduated arc-shaped scale at the pivot point. Two circular pans are suspended by three lengths of brass chain from the hooks at each end of the beam. The casting displays floral and scrollwork motifs throughout the beam and column assembly. No maker’s marks are visible on the piece.

Condition report:
The scales are in complete condition. The brass surfaces exhibit a significant aged patina with widespread tarnishing and surface oxidation. Verdigris is present within the deeper recesses of the cast decoration. The circular pans show minor surface scratches and shallow indentations consistent with use. The mechanical pivot remains functional. One chain link on the right-hand side is slightly twisted.
