A vintage Footprint Tools smoothing plane, approximately size number 4, manufactured in Sheffield, England. The tool consists of a cast iron body with a black japanned finish. The lever cap features a rectangular white and gold label displaying a silhouette of a human footprint above the word FOOTPRINT. Behind the rear handle, the main casting includes the raised text MADE ENGLAND. The tool is equipped with a steel iron and chip breaker, secured by a plated lever cap. The handles are crafted from wood, comprising a front knob and a rear tote. The plane includes a brass depth adjustment nut and a lateral adjustment lever for blade alignment.
Condition report:
The tool is in used, unrestored condition. The cast iron body and steel iron exhibit significant surface oxidation, grime, and areas of light pitting. The lever cap shows evidence of corrosion and loss of plating. The sole is intact but exhibits numerous surface scratches and light rust consistent with age and use. The wooden front knob shows heavy wear with significant loss of the original finish. The wooden rear tote appears structurally sound with minor surface scuffs and wear to the varnish. The item appears to be complete with all original parts present. Functional status is untested.
