Lot 134: A Collection of UK Cupro-Nickel Commemorative Crowns 1965-1981
A group of United Kingdom commemorative crown coins struck in cupro-nickel. The collection includes three 1981 crowns issued for the wedding of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer; two are presented in red plastic cases with silver printed text reading H.R.H. THE PRINCE OF WALES ROYAL WEDDING COMMEMORATIVE CROWN JULY 29TH 1981 LADY DIANA SPENCER. One 1980 crown commemorating the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother is housed in a blue plastic presentation case with gold lettering reading HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER 80TH BIRTHDAY AUG 4TH 1980. Loose examples comprise a 1977 Silver Jubilee crown featuring a crowned ampulla within a floral wreath and a 1965 crown commemorating Sir Winston Churchill with his profile portrait and the name CHURCHILL. All coins feature milled edges.
Condition report:
The encased 1981 and 1980 coins appear to be in uncirculated condition with minimal surface marks visible through the packaging (photo 1). The loose 1981 crown shows minor surface marks (photo 1). The 1977 Silver Jubilee crown exhibits heavy surface toning and tarnish (photo 1). The 1965 Churchill crown shows moderate surface wear and consistent toning (photo 1). The plastic presentation cases show light scuffing and accumulated dust (photo 1).
