Coins, Gold & Silver Bullion Auction
A 1978 Royal Mint proof coin set comprising six decimal denominations and a rectangular bronze-coloured Royal Mint medallion featuring the Royal Shield. The cupro-nickel denominations include a heptagonal 50 pence, a 10 pence, and a 5 pence. The bronze denominations consist of a 2 pence, a 1 penny, and a 1/2 penny. The coins feature the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin on the obverses and standard decimal designs on the reverses, including the seated Britannia, crowned lion, crowned thistle, Prince of Wales’ feathers, crowned portcullis, and crown. All reverse inscriptions utilize the NEW PENCE or NEW PENNY nomenclature. The collection is housed in its original clear acrylic display case and a light brown cardboard outer sleeve with silver printed text: COINAGE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM + NORTHERN IRELAND 1978.
Condition report:
The coins remain in uncirculated proof condition, exhibiting brilliant lustre and mirror-like fields with no visible toning or spotting. The clear acrylic case is in good condition. The cardboard outer sleeve shows minor shelf wear and light rubbing to the edges and corners.
