Estimated price: £20 - £35

Buyer's Premium:

A collection of vintage and antique military and uniform buttons, primarily of British and Commonwealth origin. The lot includes various regimental and service examples, including the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment featuring a stag motif and the Essex Regiment identified by a castle motif. A notable gilded button represents Prince Albert’s Volunteer Battalion, featuring the letters P.A.V.B. around a central saltire pattern. Other designs include the Sphinx motif associated with the Gloucestershire or Lincolnshire Regiments, and General Service patterns featuring the Royal Coat of Arms or the Tudor and St. Edward’s crowns. The collection comprises buttons in gilt brass, white metal, bronze-finished metal, and horn. Visible maker’s marks and retailer stamps on the reverse include Smith and Wright Birmingham, W.L.M. Ltd, and William Dowler and Sons. The buttons vary in size from large tunic buttons to smaller cap or cuff examples.

Condition report:

The collection is in mixed condition. Several examples retain a high-quality gilt finish with only minor surface scratches. Other items show significant age-related wear including surface oxidation, verdigris, and heavy tarnish. Some convex buttons display minor denting to the faces. Most buttons appear to have their original shanks intact.
