A large collection of loose British and Commonwealth military uniform buttons, primarily dating from the early to mid-twentieth century. The assortment represents various branches of service, including the Royal Corps of Signals, identified by the figure of Mercury (Jimmy) and the corps title, and the Royal Engineers, with buttons featuring the unit title embossed around a central crown and garter motif. Also present are Royal Air Force buttons showing the eagle and crown crest, alongside a significant number of General Service buttons bearing the Royal Coat of Arms. One large button reverse is clearly marked for Buttons Limited of Birmingham. The collection includes buttons manufactured from struck brass, white metal, and later mid-twentieth-century anodised aluminium Stay-brite materials.
Condition report:
The buttons are in mixed, used condition throughout. Examples show varying degrees of service wear, including surface scratches, verdigris, and heavy oxidation or tarnish, particularly to the older brass specimens. One button exhibits significant blackening. The anodised aluminium buttons generally remain in better aesthetic condition.
