An Ercol Goldsmith high-back armchair constructed with a steam-bent beech hoop back and a solid elm saddle seat. The back features a central decorative pierced splat with an urn and fleur-de-lys motif, flanked by eight turned spindles. The out-swept arms are supported by single turned spindles. The frame is finished in a dark Old Colonial style stain. It stands on four splayed and tapered legs joined by a central H-stretcher. The underside of the seat bears a circular maker stamp containing the numbers 5 and 0, with other faint characters present. Construction utilises traditional wedge-tenon joinery. A removable, fitted loose seat cushion upholstered in a cream-coloured damask fabric with a floral-scroll pattern is included.
Condition report:
The armchair is in good structural condition. There is noticeable wear and scuffing to the dark finish, particularly on the armrests and the lower sections of the legs where the stain has thinned to reveal the lighter wood beneath. Various minor surface scratches and indentations are present across the frame and seat underside. The upholstery is clean and well-maintained with only light signs of use.
