A pair of vintage cigarette card albums produced to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935. The first album, titled The Kings and Queens of England 1066-1935, was issued by John Player and Sons, a branch of the Imperial Tobacco Company. It contains a complete series of colour-illustrated cards depicting the lineage of English monarchs from William I to George V, each accompanied by detailed historical text. Visible cards include portraits of King Stephen, Henry II, Richard I, King John, Henry III, and Edward I. The second album, titled The Reign of King George V 1910 – Silver Jubilee – 1935, was issued by W.D. and H.O. Wills. This album contains photographic cards documenting significant milestones of the King’s reign. Visible subjects include the Three Princes at the Derby, the opening of the King George V Dock at Woolwich, the marriage of Princess Mary, and royal visits to Canberra, New Zealand, and Fiji. Both items are staple-bound with printed cream card covers featuring heraldic and royal motifs. Both albums were originally retailed for one penny.
Condition report:
Both albums are in good vintage condition consistent with their age. The covers show signs of handling including bumped corners, light creasing, and surface soiling. There is visible foxing to the exterior and interior pages, particularly within the Wills album. The cigarette cards appear neatly mounted in their respective slots. The staple bindings remain intact but show typical signs of oxidation, which has caused minor rust staining to the adjacent paper in the centre of the albums. No major tears or significant losses were observed.
