This collection consists of multiple issues of Understanding Science, a weekly educational magazine published by Sampson Low, Marston and Co. Ltd., London, during the early 1960s. The magazines are softbound with stapled wrappers and originally retailed for two shillings. Visible issues include No. 73, featuring a colour illustration of a hand holding a puffin over a map of the British Isles and the North Sea showing migration routes, and No. 74, which displays various astronomical telescopes, including a large equatorial mount telescope and a spiral staircase. Another partially visible issue depicts a ship at sea during a sunset. The covers are decorated with detailed scientific and natural history illustrations. A contemporary owner’s name, WHEATLY, is handwritten in red ink on the upper margin of the cover of issue No. 74.
Condition report:
The magazines are in good, used condition with age-appropriate wear. Visible flaws include light edge wear, minor corner creasing, and slight surface scuffing to the covers. The contemporary ownership inscription WHEATLY is present on No. 74. The stapled bindings remain intact, showing typical light stress at the staple points. Internal pages exhibit natural age toning and browning towards the edges. No significant tears or staining are visible to the exteriors.
