A hand-carved wooden sculpture of a dog, depicted in a recumbent pose with the head raised and front paws crossed. The figure is modelled as a wrinkled breed, bearing characteristics of a bulldog, mastiff, or shar-pei. It is carved from a single block of hardwood, featuring a warm, polished grain. Contrast is provided by black pigment or stain applied to the eyes, ears, nose, and paws. This piece is characteristic of contemporary decorative wood carvings produced for the international export market, often originating from Southeast Asia. No maker’s marks, stamps, or artist signatures are visible on the figure.
Condition report:
The sculpture is in generally good decorative condition. There are minor instances of surface wear and light scuffing to the timber and black finish, commensurate with handling and display. A small chip is noted to the base of the front right paw.
