A large collection of assorted British and Commonwealth military and civil uniform buttons dating from the late 19th to mid-20th century. The assembly comprises struck metal buttons of two-piece construction with rear shanks, manufactured in materials including gilt-brass, silver-toned white metal, and blackened metal. Key service branches represented include the Royal Navy, featuring fouled anchor designs; the Royal Air Force, with the RAF eagle surmounted by a crown; and the Royal Marines, with a large gilt button displaying a globe and laurel wreath inscribed ROYAL MARINES. Numerous General Service patterns are present, featuring the Royal Coat of Arms and the crest of the Royal Arms. Civil and municipal services are represented by buttons for the Metropolitan Board of Works, inscribed WATER M.B.W, and items featuring the portcullis associated with HM Customs and Excise. Other designs include the crowned harp for Irish services, various municipal coats of arms, and regimental specific buttons with monograms and specialized crests. One example bears the letters R.U.T.
Condition report:
The collection is in mixed condition. While several examples retain a high degree of their original gilt finish, many buttons exhibit varying levels of surface wear, oxidation, and tarnish. Some pieces show evidence of green verdigris. All buttons appear to retain their original shanks.
