A set of numismatic items comprising the first decimal proof coinage issued by the Royal Mint in 1971. The collection includes six proof coins in denominations of fifty new pence, ten new pence, five new pence, two new pence, one new penny, and one-half new penny. The three higher denominations are struck in a silver-coloured cupro-nickel alloy, while the three lower denominations are struck in a copper-coloured bronze alloy. Reverses visible in the display show Britannia, a crowned lion, a crowned thistle, the Prince of Wales’s feathers, a crowned portcullis, and St Edward’s Crown, all featuring the word NEW in the denomination. The set is accompanied by a rectangular bronze-coloured commemorative token depicting the Royal Coat of Arms and inscribed ROYAL MINT. The items are housed in the original black presentation folder with the title THE DECIMAL COINAGE OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND 1971 rendered in a white dot-pattern on the cover. This set commemorates the United Kingdom’s official transition to a decimal monetary system.
