A hand-carved stone mask, fashioned from variegated banded onyx or marble, depicting a stylised human face in the Pre-Columbian Mayan tradition. The mask features a prominent straight nose, almond-shaped eye apertures, and a wide-open mouth. The ornate headdress is decorated with horizontal bands and three circular rosettes with radiating incised lines, motifs that are repeated on the lower ear-like projections. The stone exhibits natural variegation in shades of tan, cream, and brown. The reverse is hollowed and bears a small white adhesive label with the numbers 5, 9, 2, along with faint, illegible markings at the top. Two holes are drilled into the sides with a modern suspension string attached.
Height: approximately 26.5 cm
Width: approximately 20.5 cm.
Condition report:
The mask is in good overall condition with some minor surface scuffs and light wear consistent with handling. There is some adhesive residue from the label on the reverse. The suspension cord is a modern addition.
