A faceted drinking vessel or small vase carved from spinach green nephrite jade. The vessel features a flared circular rim above a body carved with vertical facets, creating an octagonal profile that tapers slightly towards the base. The stone exhibits a deep forest-green colour with characteristic darker mottled inclusions and areas of lighter, translucent clouding. The carving is designed to highlight the natural colour and translucency of the stone. This style of jade carving is traditional in Chinese decorative arts, often associated with the late Qing dynasty through to the 20th century, with a form drawing inspiration from Mughal-style jade work. No maker’s marks, reign marks, or inscriptions are visible.
Condition report:
The item is in good overall condition. There are natural internal fissures and surface inclusions characteristic of nephrite jade. The rim shows a smooth, polished finish with no significant chips or cracks. The surface retains a soft, waxy lustre consistent with well-polished hardstone.
