A pair of vintage British miners safety lamps of typical cylindrical form, constructed from brass and glass. The first lamp features a natural aged patina and bears a circular embossed brass plaque on the chimney with the following inscription: THE PROTECTOR LAMP & LIGHTING Co Ltd. TYPE 6 M & Q SAFETY LAMPS APPROVAL No. B/28 MAKERS ECCLES. This identifies it as a Type 6 safety lamp manufactured in Eccles, Manchester, for official use in mines and quarries. The second lamp has a bright polished finish and bears an embossed circular plaque inscribed: HOCKLEY LAMP & LIMELIGHT COMPANY COLLIERY ReNo SERIAL No. HOCKLEY – ENGLAND. Both examples follow a traditional design comprising a vented brass chimney with a top suspension loop, five vertical brass guard pillars surrounding a central glass chamber, and a screw-off circular brass fuel reservoir at the base.
Condition report:
The lamps are in good overall condition. One lamp retains an authentic aged patina with areas of surface oxidation, while the second lamp has been polished to a bright finish. There is minor surface wear and light scratching consistent with age and handling. The glass cylinders on both lamps appear intact without visible cracks or chips. Internal burner components are present but remain untested for mechanical function.
