A vintage set of balance scales constructed from cast iron with a worn tan-coloured painted finish. The central balance beam is fitted with two applied metal plates, the first inscribed with the words TO WEIGH and the second with 14 LB. indicating its maximum capacity. A circular lead verification seal is positioned at the centre of the beam. The apparatus includes a removable deep galvanised metal weighing scoop and a flat, hexagonal platform for weights. Accompanying the scales is a collection of five hexagonal cast iron weights of varying sizes, each fitted with a top ring handle and lead adjustment plugs. The largest weight is embossed with 5 KILOG above a numeral 5.
Scale Base Width: 290 mm
Overall Height to Top of Scoop: 270 mm
Scoop Length: 320 mm.
Condition report:
The set is in used, unrestored condition, showing significant surface oxidation and rust throughout, particularly on the cast iron weights and the base of the scales. The tan paint on the scale body is heavily worn, chipped, and thinning. The galvanised scoop exhibits surface corrosion and signs of general industrial or domestic use. The mechanical balance function appears intact, though the unit has not been tested for modern accuracy.
