This mid-20th-century English earthenware jug was manufactured by Price Brothers of Burslem, Staffordshire. The vessel features a baluster-shaped body set upon a pedestal foot with a tall, curved handle. The handle is embellished with a relief-moulded floral terminal at its upper junction with the rim. The body is finished with a distinctive horizontal ribbed or beehive texture. The piece is decorated with relief-moulded motifs of exotic birds and flowers, which have been hand-painted with overglaze enamels in shades of pink, yellow, blue, and green. A thin brown line accents the rim and the edge of the foot. The underside is marked with an embossed arch reading MADE IN ENGLAND, an impressed FEN mark, and a green stamped wreath mark containing the text PRICE BROS. and MADE IN ENGLAND. An impressed 99v is also present.
Height: approximately 30 cm
Base diameter: approximately 11.5 cm.
Condition report:
The jug exhibits extensive and uniform fine crazing to the glaze throughout, which is characteristic of earthenware of this period. There are minor areas of glaze wear and small nicks consistent with age and use, particularly around the rim and base. No significant chips, cracks, or restorations are evident.
