A stylized decorative figure of a seal or sea lion, carved from banded onyx. The animal is depicted in a characteristic resting pose with its head raised and chest supported by the front flippers. The stone features natural horizontal banding in shades of cream, off-white, and pale amber, displaying translucent properties. No maker’s marks, factory stamps, or signatures are visible on the body or the base. This style of stone carving was widely produced as decorative export ware during the mid-to-late 20th century, particularly in Mexico and Italy.
Condition report:
The figure is in good overall condition. There is some minor surface roughness and small natural inclusions visible on the tip of the snout and the rear flipper. Natural internal veining and fine fissures characteristic of the stone are present throughout. No significant chips, cracks, or signs of restoration are evident.
