A large earthenware garden seat or pedestal modelled in the form of a standing caparisoned elephant supporting a flat rectangular seat with a flared rim. The piece features moulded relief decoration throughout, finished in a palette of brown, green, and blue glazes against a cream-coloured ground, reminiscent of traditional Chinese Sancai glazes. The saddlecloth displays a central blue medallion with a stylised character, surrounded by green foliate scrollwork and a Greek key meander border with a fringe of blue and green tassels. The elephant’s harness is detailed with blue floral bosses and hanging tassels. No maker’s marks or factory stamps are visible.
Condition report:
The item shows overall fine crazing to the glaze. There are visible small chips and areas of glaze loss on the toes of the feet and some minor nicks or kiln flaws along the upper rim of the pedestal. No major cracks or structural repairs are evident from the photographs.
