A 20th-century hand-carved wood sculpture depicting a kneeling woman carrying a child on her back. The figure is carved from a single piece of dense, dark hardwood, likely ebony, and finished with a dark polish. The woman is rendered with stylised facial features, a headband, and a tiered necklace. She wears a wrap-around garment decorated with incised geometric patterns, which are mirrored on the integral circular base. The child is carried in a traditional sling on the woman’s back. This piece is characteristic of regional woodcarvings from East Africa produced during the mid-to-late 20th century.
