Lot 40:
Description
This lot comprises two pairs of vintage British military-issue field binoculars. The first pair is manufactured by Wray, London, featuring a porro-prism design with a metal body and black-textured vulcanite-style grips. The right-hand shoulder plate is engraved with a broad arrow symbol above the text Field 8.2 degrees and a circular logo containing a stylized letter W. The centre hinge cap is stamped with the serial number 135228. This instrument is accompanied by a stitched brown leather carry case with a silver-tone latch bearing a red triangle emblem. The second pair is a Bino. Prism No. 2 Mark III pattern, featuring a metal body with black-textured grips and a leather neck strap. The central hinge is marked with the serial number 152495, and a broad arrow symbol is visible on the right barrel near the eyepiece. The left shoulder plate is incised with the designation Bino. Prism No. 2 Mk. III. Both instruments are of porro-prism construction and include leather neck straps.
Condition report:
Both pairs of binoculars show signs of heavy field use and age. There is significant paint loss and brassing to the metal edges, shoulder plates, and barrels. The vulcanite-style grips exhibit surface wear, scuffing, and accumulated grime. The leather neck straps are heavily aged, dry, and worn. The leather carry case shows significant scuffing, surface abrasions, and wear to the stitching. The optical clarity and mechanical focusing movements are untested.
