Description
A collection of vintage household objects featuring a set of cast iron and brass balance scales by Salter of Staffordshire. The scales comprise a black-painted cast iron frame with a decorative oval label to the base reading The Salter Staffordshire. Accompanying the scales is a removable brass pan and a set of graduated weights in both cast iron and brass. The ceramic group includes a Bell’s blended Scotch whisky decanter in the form of a bell, a character creamer modelled as a monk in brown and cream glazes, basket-form vessels with moulded basketweave textures and single handles, and a small jug with hand-painted floral motifs on a white ground. The scales exhibit a traditional balance mechanism with a central pivot.
Condition report:
The collection shows signs of age-related wear and use throughout. The cast iron components of the scales have some paint loss and surface oxidation, while the brass pan and weights display tarnish and minor pitting. The ceramic items appear generally sound, with some surface abrasions, minor crazing to the glazes, and wear to the printed labels and painted decorations.
