Lot 253:
Description
A set of six gentleman’s dress buttons, suitable for a waistcoat or formal attire, presented in a period fitted case with six brass or gilt metal split ring fasteners. Each circular button features a polished mother-of-pearl face set within a 9ct gold mount. The centre of each button is embellished with a twisted gold wire cross motif, designed to simulate the appearance of traditional thread. The buttons are constructed with a smooth gold-toned metal backing and a fixed shank for attachment. The original case is finished in green leather with gold-tooled decorative borders, a cream silk lid lining, and a tan velvet base. Stamped 9ct on the reverse.
Condition report:
The buttons are in good condition, showing light surface wear and minor tarnishing to the metal reverses consistent with age. The mother-of-pearl retains a bright lustre. The period case shows wear, including scuffing and leather loss around the edges and rim. The interior silk and velvet show minor staining and indentations from the buttons. The hinge and push-button clasp remain functional.
