Description

A traditional hand-carved woodblock used for printing on textiles or wallpaper, likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The block is crafted from a dense, dark hardwood and features an intricate geometric design. The central motif consists of a diagonal lattice pattern forming repeated diamond shapes, enclosed by horizontal borders featuring rows of small circular indentations. The design is deeply recessed into the wood to hold dye or ink. The reverse side features a raised, integrated wooden handle that is pinned to the main body with metal fasteners. Small bored holes at one end contain remnants of natural fibre, which were traditionally used as pitch pins or alignment markers to help the printer register the pattern accurately on fabric. The surface displays a rich, dark patina and staining from historic dye applications.

Condition report:

The item is in good antique condition, showing signs of heavy historic use consistent with its function. The wood has a deep, aged patina and displays surface abrasions, minor edge loss to the carved relief, and staining from previous dye applications. The handle is securely attached. No significant cracks or structural damage are noted.
