Description

A marquetry wood veneer panel by Charles Spindler depicting the town of Saint-Ursanne, Switzerland. The pictorial scene features a central arched stone gateway, a building with a prominent tiered tower and spire, and a large tree with textured burr-wood foliage. The composition is constructed from various inlaid wood veneers of differing grains and colours to create depth and detail. Signed in the lower right: Spindler. The verso retains two printed labels; the primary label reads SPINDLER PANEL / Ste. Ursanne / 2101, and a smaller secondary label includes the reference number 5. 984. The piece is presented in a dark, figured wood frame.
315 mm x 210 mm (frame)
275 mm x 170 mm (sight).

Condition report:

The marquetry surface appears well-preserved with no significant lifting or losses visible. The figured wood frame exhibits minor surface scuffs and wear consistent with age, particularly at the corners. The paper backing on the reverse is torn in several places and shows signs of discolouration. Labels on the reverse are legible but display some staining.
