Description
This mid-20th-century oil painting on board by the British artist John Ambrose depicts a large multi-masted sailing ship, likely a British galleon or man-o-war, under full sail in calm waters. The composition includes a secondary sailing vessel in the distance and a coastline featuring a lighthouse or windmill structure. The artist employs a soft, diffused light with a palette of muted blues, greys, and ochres, using horizontal brushwork to define the water’s surface. The work is signed Ambrose in white paint in the lower right corner. It is housed in a dark wood frame with a gilded inner border. A black L-shaped ruler is included in the image for scale, with the horizontal arm measuring 12 inches.
