Lot 217:
Description
This lot consists of a fraternal sash and a breast jewel belonging to the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB), awarded to Brother Sam M. Bennie of the Excelsior Lodge No. 1082, Hull & District Province. The sash is constructed from light blue watered silk-effect ribbon featuring gold bullion-style embroidery and metallic fringe. It is embroidered with the recipient’s name, the designation ROH (Roll of Honour), and a central emblem containing the Royal Cypher E II R within a border bearing the Order of the Garter motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. Below this is the RAOB motto JUSTICE TRUTH PHILANTHROPY and the lodge details. The lower section features an embroidered motif of buffalo horns. The breast jewel is suspended from a light blue moiré ribbon and features a gilt-metal top scroll marked ROLL OF HONOR surmounted by a crown. Three horizontal bars record the recipient’s advancement: 1st DEG. 18-10-1970, 2nd DEG. 12-12-1971, and 3rd DEG. 20-3-1975. The pendant is a multi-rayed star with a central blue enamel ring bearing the Latin motto PALMA NON SINE PULVERE surrounding an intertwined RAOB monogram in red and white enamel.
Condition report:
Both items are in good condition for their age. The sash ribbon is clean with minor creasing from folding, and there is light fraying to the gold tassels at the ends. The embroidery remains bright and intact. The breast jewel shows light surface wear and minor tarnishing to the metal surfaces, but the enamel is well-preserved without visible chips or cracks. The pin fitting on the reverse of the jewel is present.
